Behind the Science: How PT-141 Works at the Neurobiological Level
PT-141, also known as Bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide designed to address sexual dysfunction. It works by activating melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system, which influences brain pathways associated with sexual desire. Unlike treatments that target blood flow, PT-141 provides a different mechanism, enhancing desire without affecting the vascular system. Originally intended for tanning, its ability to increase sexual arousal was uncovered during research, paving the way for its approval by the FDA in 2019 under the name Vyleesi. As with any medication, it may cause side effects like nausea and flushing.
